Twinning of the Etobicoke Creek Trunk Sanitary Sewer

Location: Mississauga, Ontario, Canada
Owner: Region of Peel
Completed: May 2016

In April 2015, CRS Tunnelling – Dibco Underground, JV was low bidder on the Twinning of the Etobicoke Creek Trunk Sanitary Sewer Project for the Region of Peel. The project involved the construction of approximately 612m of 1,800mm internal diameter trunk sanitary sewer underneath active operating surfaces at Lester B. Pearson International Airport (LBPIA).  The proposed trunk sanitary sewer was constructed primarily using Microtunnel Boring Machine (MTBM) tunnelling methods. Pearson Airport is the busiest airport in Canada, which posed ongoing challenges for this site, as the airport runs 24/7, 365 days per year. Work was planned around minimizing any type of runway or taxiway shutdown to support either underground works, monitoring on taxiways and runways, or heavy crane lifts. This project won the 2016 Project of the Year – Honorable Mention for New Installation Project!  Winners were announced on World Trenchless Day – September 22, 2016, and will be recognized at the 2017 NASTT No-Dig Show in Washington, D.C.
