Location: Milwaukee, WI
Owner: Wisconsin DOT
Completed: May 2010
This project entailed the installation of storm sewer tunnels across the freeway interchange of I-94 and I-43 near the Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee. In total, we installed 258 lineal feet of 54” and 5,831 lineal feet of 60” RCP microtunnel, and 18 shafts varying in depth from 28-50 feet deep. The project was very difficult due to heavy traffic nearby and working within small/tight areas within the WDOT right of ways. Our slurry equipment staging had to be centralized in certain areas and piping installed to shaft sites that had limited staging area. Mobilizations could only occur at night during lane shut downs. Many of these constraints made it difficult and required precise planning to complete the work.
Super Excavators purchased an innovative piece of equipment – the “LoDril” from Bay Shore Systems, Inc. This versatile machine allows us to be more effective in accessing complex areas.
